Erdem Yörük, Ph.D.

I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Center for Imaging Science (CIS) at Johns Hopkins University. I received my BS and MS degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bogazici University, Turkey, and my PhD degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Johns Hopkins University, with Bioinformatics track affiliated with JHU Institute for Computational Medicine. My research areas include machine learning, probabilistic graphical models in computer vision and computational biology.

During my graduate years in Hopkins, I worked under the supervision of professors Donald Geman and Laurent Younes. I mainly studied probabilistic graphical models for computer vision and computational biology, with applications to optical character recognition and cancer phenotype classification from microarray data. I also developed a comprehensive statistical model for cell signaling networks, which only relies on gene expression data, and successfully predicts hidden protein abnormalities as therapeutic targets of breast cancer.

In my postdoctoral studies, I am more concentrated in adaptive machine learning and computational vision. While building on my previous PhD work, I am also active in multiple other research projects conducted by inter-disciplinary teams from various institutions. With Drs. Donald Geman, Laurent Younes and Bruno Jedynak from CIS, I am developing an adaptive learning strategy for vision, which is designed to recover the high level interpretation of a complex scene (or video), based on an entropy-driven online organization of low level queries and their corresponding simple classifiers. In another project, I am working at JHU-Vision Lab with Dr. Rene Vidal and as a member of a diverse research team led by Dr. Stuart Russell from Berkeley University. As a part of a larger Bayesian Logic (BLOG) model, I am developing a deformable part-based and generative graphical model in 3D, for simultaneous object category recognition and pose estimation.

Here is my most recent CV: ERDEM YORUK CV (3-12).pdf and my PhD dissertation: PhD dissertation - Erdem Yoruk - Jul11.pdf.
